Basketball Team!!!

I made my school’s ‘Junior Girls Basketball Team of 2013’!!!!! I had two tryouts. The first tryout went terrible for me. Well, when it was happening it was. It was a Monday. I was trying out for the basketball team for the very first time and I was terrified. I was scared that I wouldn’t do well.

Anyways, the first drill was shooting. The coaches told us to grab a basketball and line up. The grade 8 assistants showed us how to shoot properly using the ‘BEEF’ and ‘Rainbow’ techniques. BEEF stands for Balancing the ball in your hands, Elbow should be right underneath the ball, Eyes should be focused at the net, and you always have to Follow through. The Rainbow Technique-close your left eye (if you’re right handed) and ‘put your right hand in the basket’. We did a shoot-around and that went well.

Next was dribbling. This drill was simple. All we had to do was dribble and walk forward then back. Next, we had to run and dribble. Everything was going well until we started a scrimmage. I wasn’t benched at first but after 5 minutes they put me out. They benched me. For the rest of the tryouts. Which was the longest 20 minutes of my life watching the rest of the girls double dribble, travel, foul, and shoot from UNDERNEATH  the net.

After the tryouts I questioned. Why wouldn’t they put me in? I looked at the other girls that were benched with me. I had to think about it for a while to find out why they would bench us. I looked at what we had in common. Then it hit me. We’re all short. Just because we’re short it doesn’t mean we’re not good at sports. I mean, I think it’s mean to put out people that may be short but have talent. But the time I wasn’t benched, I was stealing the ball, running as fast as the wind, making lay-ups like there was no tomorrow, and not being a hog unlike some people. Also during that time, I also fell because somebody tripped me. I think that somebody was myself. LOL!

The next tryout was better. This tryout was SO fun. The first drill was kind of a one-on-one. We had to pick a partner and line up on the outside of the net. One person on the left and one on the right. The person on the right had to shoot it in the net while the person on the left had to guard them (play defense). My partner was Nation and it was really funny. Nation and I were doing great on offense but our defense could be better. Especially my defense because I’m short…

The next drill was HARD. I had a big disadvantage or should I say a short disadvantage. Rebounds. Just my luck, my partner was like 2 feet taller than me. Every rebound she got and I end up with a soar face from me jumping right at her elbow. She was REALLY tall…

Finally, the scrimmage. For the first 5 minutes I was benched. And I was feeling rejected. But after 5 minutes I got put in!!! Until I fell again. I was going to steal the ball from behind. I was running full speed and when I got there she ran the other way. I tripped over my own shoe and got a rug-burn. I had to sit out for a while. Then I thought, what am I thinking! I’m ruining my chance of  being on a BASKETBALL team! Just suck it up and prove that you’ve got what it takes to be on a basketball team. You can do it… I got up and told them I’m ready to play. I didn’t ask if I could play again. I sucked it up and was aggressive. For the next couple minutes, it felt unbelievable. I was doing my best and my best was pretty good.

Guess what, pretty good will put you on the Junior Girls Basketball Team. My family was so proud of me. Especially my Godfather. He plays basketball, too. In fact, he helped me a lot with my sports. Him and my Dad practice basketball with me. What I learned during this experience is:

  • You have to show that you want something and prove it. (For a sports team)
  • Don’t think bad about something that could be either good or bad. For example, you could be benched because you were playing really good or bad. Look at the brighter side.
  • BE PROUD OF YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS!!!

Shout Out #1

Flickr friends

I’d like to give my first shout out to my 4 best friends. Their names are Elena, Nation, Griffen, and Samuel.

Elena: My bus buddy and my best (girl) friend. We first met last year. We were both new to the school. We were randomly talking about our old schools and our bus’. We noticed that we were on the same bus. And I guess that’s how we spent all that time out of school. She’s outgoing, funny, and loud (in a good way).

Nation: My blogger buddy and my best (girl) friend. I also met her last year. She came later in the school year. Our special bond is that we are both Asian. ASIAN DOMINATION! She is the one who inspired me to do my own blog. Her website is called http://www.threegirlsandablog.com. She can be shy but then she can be crazy! That’s what I love about people. When you think the opposite of what they really are.

Griffen: My best (guy) friend. He is the most outgoing person I know. He’ll talk to anyone and everyone. He’s not just outgoing but really funny. He makes a joke out of everything. We weren’t in the class last year so I didn’t really know him that well. What I thought before, was that he was REALLY weird. I wasn’t wrong, but he’s weird in the cool way. Check out and subscribe to his videos on YouTube. Just type in Griffen Appleby and his channel will show up. Nickname-Gippen

Samuel: Like Elena, Samuel is my bus buddy and my best friend. Whenever we have nothing to do on the bus…Well, when Samuel is on the bus, there’s always something to do! He can make anyone laugh. He makes everyone feel welcome and included. He is one of the funniest people I know. Nickname-Samul.

Happy Valentines Day

Romantic Heart form Love Seeds

As you probably know it’s Valentines Day! This day is to celebrate a four letter word. It starts with L and ends with an O-V-E. I’m not only talking about crushes at school but family love and friendship love. So today at school, we have our annual Valentines dance. I found the perfect someone to dance with. Who I’m talking about are my BESTIES! At the dance everyone is so shy at the beginning. No ones dancing. No ones singing. They are either sitting or walking in circles. I was just standing their for a while because 1. I was the only and first person there. 2. I hated the song. 3. The lights were on. I only dance when the lights are off so people barely see me. Later on, I requested a song, surprisingly I forgot what I requested. What I do know is that we were dancing like there was no tomorrow and scaring guys off by screaming/singing along. It was pretty funny because when our guy classmates came over, they went away in a second! What I learned today is jumping to the beat while lazily fist pumping counts as dancing. What I was surprised to see was my guy friend danced a dance for the first time in public! I was sweating like crazy! I tried to sneak in every photo! (Have you seen Ellen DeGeneres’ creeper pics?) It was so fun but the songs were repetitive. Overall, I had fun!

Speeches…AGAIN?!?

As you know from a couple posts back we did speeches.  I did it on dreams and sadly didn’t win. But I ham very happy for my two friends that are going to the gym and the alternative (they are all girls). I very much enjoyed their speech. The topics were ‘Lying’, ‘Larisa Yurkiw’ and ‘GMO’s’. Anyways, we are doing another speech but this time in french -.- I have no ideas for my speech topic! I don’t know much about right now because my teacher told us to focus on our topic.  I just wanted to tell you about it now instead of telling you all about it in one post and it being a whole chapter in a book. What I mean is I don’t want it to be too long or you wont read because you’re too lazy. (I don’t blame you I would of done it too) I will get back to you later. Keep an eye out!

Pay It Forward

My school has this new activity called “Pay It Forward”. These are bracelets. Everyone starts off with 2 and if they do a good deed for someone the person doing a good deed, will give one bracelet to the person they helped. Everyone must keep one. The concept is to have a chain reaction by passing bracelets around by the cause of an act of kindness. If you see that a person has several bracelets, it shows that others have done good deeds for him/her, but that person does not do anything back. I think this is a good idea to encourage kids to help one another.

Speech Spazzing!!!

My school is having our speech competition again. I love making speeches ad presenting them. This is my second year at this school and the competition here is intense. Every class that grades range from grade 4-6 will present their speech in their class first. Next, the class will pick two people to go to the gym and compete with other classes in front of the whole school. The winner will go to this huge competition with a bunch of school. ONE person from grades 4-6 and ONE person from grades 7-8. Last year I competed in the gym with my speech about Michael Jackson. That was my second year writing speeches. I wanted to win, but so did everyone else. My friend in the other grade 5 class won first place with her speech on candy. I think she deserved it. Anyways, the reason why i am soooo stressed and spazzed out is that this year, I had a brilliant speech topic… So did 7 other people in the school. I thought I had a really good chance of winning this year!!! The story gets even worse. Remember that girl that won last year? She is one of the seven people that have the same speech topic as me. Everyone is telling me all I have to do is believe in myself but if you just hear her speak, its so…. its like…. its speaking potential, I guess. I’m thinking about writing different speeches and asking my teacher which one is a winner. I am just so upset! I don’t know any other speech topics. It’s even more upsetting because I finished my research and halfway done writing while my competition is already practicing memorizing her speech. Wish me luck.
